Client success story: South Dakota SkillsUSA — how the state's workforce pipeline got found

There is a welding booth in a South Dakota high school shop where a seventeen-year-old is laying a bead she has practiced two hundred times. Down the hall, an automotive student is diagnosing a no-start. In another town, a nursing student is running a patient scenario against a clock. None of them are thinking about marketing. They are thinking about a red blazer, a state contest, and the very real possibility that this turns into a career.

That is the work **South Dakota SkillsUSA** has been doing since **1965**. The problem was never the work. The problem was that an employer in Sioux Falls hiring welders, a teacher in Lemmon who wanted to start a chapter, and a sophomore in Watertown who had never heard the word SkillsUSA all had a hard time finding it.

> "SkillsUSA empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens."

About South Dakota SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA is the number one workforce development organization for students — a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to make sure America has a skilled workforce. The South Dakota association runs out of the state office at **Lake Area Technical College in Watertown**, and membership has grown every single year.

What that looks like on the ground:

  • **Competitions** — 100+ occupational and leadership contests judged by South Dakota industry professionals
  • **Leadership** — elected state officers, advisor training, employability workshops and the Fall FOCUS Leadership Conference
  • **Career pathways** — welding, automotive, healthcare, IT, construction, cosmetology, criminal justice and more
  • **Employer connection** — a direct pipeline from SD classrooms to SD employers, plus scholarships and industry certifications

Roughly **2,400+ South Dakota students** touched, **20+ active chapters**, all four state technical colleges represented, and high schools in every corner of the state. Nationally, more than 7,000 students compete each year across 105 skill areas — a program the U.S. Department of Labor has called a successful model of employer-driven youth development.

The challenge

Non-profits and education organizations carry a marketing burden that most businesses do not: they have to reach four completely different audiences at once, with no budget to speak of, and they have to do it again from scratch every school year as students graduate and advisors turn over.

South Dakota SkillsUSA needed to reach students who had never heard of it, advisors who needed paperwork and deadlines, employers who wanted to hire trained talent, and sponsors deciding where their workforce dollars go. One website, four jobs. Meanwhile the state's skilled-trades shortage kept getting louder, and the organization built specifically to solve it was hard to find in a search.

> "The goal was never traffic. It was one more advisor starting a chapter, and one more student finding out this existed before graduation."

The strategy

We started with the audience math. A student searching "welding programs South Dakota" is not the same person as an advisor searching "how to start a SkillsUSA chapter," and neither of them is the plant manager searching for a way to hire. Instead of one homepage trying to please everyone, we built four clear front doors and let the search engine decide which one to open.

The second decision was to lead with South Dakota. National SkillsUSA has plenty of reach. What South Dakota students, teachers and employers needed was local proof — SD contests, SD sponsors, SD jobs, SD scholarships, an office in Watertown with a real person answering the phone.

The work completed

Branding

We tightened how the SkillsUSA identity shows up in South Dakota — consistent logo usage across the website, conference signage, chapter materials, sponsor decks and social profiles, always inside national brand standards. Messaging moved from organizational description to a single line anyone can repeat: South Dakota's workforce begins here.

Print marketing

  • Student recruitment brochures for high school and technical college shops
  • Advisor chapter-start guides and membership deadline flyers
  • State conference signage, banners and contest wayfinding
  • Sponsor and partner presentation materials
  • Trade show and career fair display materials
  • Business cards and letterhead for the state office

Website development

skillsusasd.org was rebuilt around the four audiences: a career pathway quiz for students, a chapter roadmap and resource library for advisors, a job board for employers, and a clear sponsorship path for partners. Add an event calendar with countdowns to real deadlines, a state officers page students actually want to be on, and a partner wall that gives sponsors visible credit. Mobile-first and fast, because most students open it on a phone in a shop class.

SEO

Search work targeted the way South Dakotans actually type: career and technical education South Dakota, welding programs SD, SkillsUSA South Dakota chapter, technical college trade programs South Dakota, skilled trades scholarships SD. Each term maps to a page built to answer it — clean headings, descriptive alt text, structured data and strong Core Web Vitals.

Local visibility

The Watertown state office optimized in Google with accurate hours, contact routing and location, plus the annual event calendar surfaced so conferences and deadlines show up when people search them. Consistent name, address and phone across the web so an advisor calling at 4:15 on a Friday reaches Nikki, not a dead line.

AI visibility optimization

Students and advisors increasingly ask an assistant first. Those systems answer from clear, structured, well-cited content, so we made SkillsUSA SD easy to quote accurately: plain-language pages, an FAQ written the way people actually ask, organization and event schema, and consistent facts — since 1965, 2,400+ students, 20+ chapters, $8 national dues, March 1 deadline — repeated identically everywhere.

Ongoing marketing support

A partnership, not a project: campaigns timed to the school calendar, membership deadline pushes, conference promotion, Facebook content around contests and state officers, print as needed, and reporting that shows which searches turned into chapter inquiries.

The results

  • Membership growth every year, with all four state technical colleges represented
  • Improved statewide search visibility for career and technical education in South Dakota
  • Advisors finding chapter paperwork and deadlines without emailing the state office first
  • Employers reaching SD-trained talent through a real job posting path
  • A sponsor wall that gives South Dakota partners visible return on their investment
  • Growing AI search presence for skilled trades and CTE questions in South Dakota
  • One consistent brand from a chapter flyer to a conference banner to a search result

Why it matters

South Dakota does not have a shortage of young people willing to work with their hands. It has a shortage of young people who know the path exists. Every welder, technician, nurse and electrician this organization steers into a career is a business somewhere in the state that gets to keep its doors open. Marketing did not build that pipeline — sixty years of teachers and industry volunteers did. Marketing just made sure the right people find it.
