Flandreau Indian School graduates celebrating on campus in Flandreau, South Dakota

Drive north out of Flandreau, South Dakota on Crescent Street and the campus shows up the way it has for four generations — brick, trees, a gym, a flagpole, and a couple hundred teenagers who came here from tribal communities scattered across the country. Some traveled six hours. Some traveled sixteen. Almost all of them heard about the place from a relative.

That word-of-mouth pipeline is the strength of Flandreau Indian School and, until recently, also its ceiling. A parent in another state searching for a tuition-free Native boarding high school had a hard time finding it — and a harder time understanding it once they did.

Rooted in culture. Built for what's next.

About Flandreau Indian School

FIS is a tuition-free boarding high school for Native American students in grades 9–12, federally operated by the Bureau of Indian Education. It has been educating students on this campus since 1893 — more than 130 years — and today serves students from 30+ federally recognized tribes.

What makes the school different is not a slogan. It is the structure:

  • Academic excellence — college-prep curriculum, dual-credit coursework, small classes, a 12:1 student-teacher ratio
  • Cultural identity — Native language, traditions and ceremony woven into daily life, not bolted on as an elective
  • Lifelong community — dorm life, athletics, clubs, counselors and mentors that outlast graduation
  • No cost — tuition, room and board fully funded; families pay nothing

The school also sits on the traditional homelands of the Dakota people, and says so plainly on its own site — which tells you most of what you need to know about how FIS handles its story.

The challenge

A school does not market like a business. FIS was not chasing volume — it was trying to reach the right families, in the right moment, with accurate information. Three problems got in the way.

First, discovery. A grandmother in Arizona typing "Native American boarding high school" was far more likely to land on a national directory or a decades-old news article than on the school itself.

Second, clarity. The single most important fact — that it costs nothing — was buried. Families assumed a boarding school meant tuition they could not afford and stopped reading.

Third, history. Indian boarding schools carry a heavy and complicated past in this country. FIS today is a chosen, culture-first, student-centered high school, and the website had to say that clearly enough that a cautious parent could feel the difference.

The goal was never traffic. It was one more family finding the school before the application window closed.
The FIS playbook

The strategy

We started where families start: a phone, at night, with a question. Everything got built for that moment — fast pages, plain language, the cost answered before it is asked, and a call button that reaches an actual admissions person in Flandreau.

Then we mapped four audiences that never want the same page: prospective students, parents and guardians, current families and staff, and alumni. One homepage cannot serve all four, so we gave each a front door and let search decide which one to open.

The work completed

Branding

Consistent logo usage across the website, campus signage, print, athletics and social profiles, anchored to the school's maroon identity. Messaging tightened around one line anyone can repeat — rooted in culture, built for what's next — with the Est. 1893 legacy mark carried alongside it.

Print marketing

  • Admissions and recruitment brochures for tribal schools and community events
  • Student and parent handbooks, dorm and mail information sheets
  • Campus wayfinding, event banners and powwow signage
  • Athletics schedules, programs and spirit materials
  • Alumni and reunion pieces, plus letterhead and business cards

Website development

flandreauindianeducation.com was rebuilt mobile-first with an admissions path front and center, a student portal and calendar one tap away, a staff directory, a campus and drone tour, an alumni section, athletics, news and events. Tuition-free is stated on the homepage, not three clicks deep. A Lakota language toggle sits in the header — a small feature that says a lot about whose school this is.

SEO

Search work targeted how families actually type: Native American boarding school, BIE school South Dakota, tuition-free boarding high school, Flandreau Indian School enrollment, Native high school grades 9-12. Each term maps to a page built to answer it, with clean headings, descriptive alt text, EducationalOrganization structured data and strong Core Web Vitals.

Local visibility

The Flandreau campus optimized in Google with accurate address, hours and contact routing, plus the school calendar surfaced so open houses, conferences and powwow dates appear when people search them. Consistent name, address and phone everywhere, so a call on a Friday afternoon reaches the office instead of a dead line.

AI visibility optimization

Families increasingly ask an assistant before they ask a school. Those systems answer from clear, structured, well-cited content, so we made FIS easy to quote accurately: plain-language pages, an FAQ written the way people actually ask, organization schema, and consistent facts — established 1893, grades 9–12, BIE-operated, no tuition, 30+ tribes — repeated identically everywhere.

Ongoing marketing support

A partnership, not a project: campaigns timed to the school calendar, enrollment pushes ahead of application deadlines, powwow and graduation promotion, social content around student achievement and athletics, print as needed, and reporting on what actually turned into an inquiry.

The results

  • Families finding the school directly instead of through third-party directories
  • The tuition-free message visible in the first screen instead of buried in a PDF
  • A working online application replacing phone tag and mailed paperwork
  • Improved search visibility for Native American boarding school and BIE school queries
  • Campus events, athletics and news reaching parents and alumni without a mailing
  • Growing AI search presence, with assistants answering accurately about enrollment and cost
  • One consistent brand from a recruitment brochure to campus signage to a search result

Why it matters

A high school is not a product, and enrollment is not a sales funnel. But a family that cannot find a school cannot choose it. Every student who lands at FIS because a search worked is four years of academics, culture and community they might otherwise have missed — and a community back home that gets a graduate. Marketing did not build 130 years of that. It just made sure the next family finds the door.
